2014 ACOP schedule finalised

June 6th 2014 By Joshua Bell

The full 2014 Asia Championship of Poker schedule has now been announced and confirmed, with PokerStars LIVE Macau’s biggest tournament series set to run from October 24th through November 9th.

When the Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) was first launched in 2012, it was clear the team at PokerStars LIVE Macau had created what would become the biggest poker tournament in Asia.

Xing Zhou won that first ACOP Main Event, defeating a field of 184 players in the HK$100,000 (~US$13,000) buy-in event, claiming the almost US$500,000 top prize. Then, one year later, 203 players hit the felt for the 2013 ACOP Main Event and Sunny Jung was crowned the champion, taking home just under US$600,000.

One more player will join Zhou and Jung as an ACOP Main Event champion later in 2014, but will likely pick up even more cash if the trend of field growth at PokerStars LIVE Macau continues.

The 2014 ACOP Main Event is set to begin on November 4th, but the full ACOP schedule will run from October 24th - November 9th and will feature 14 official ‘ACOP Title Events’. All of these events will see the eventual winners take home the prestigious “Spadie” trophy, with the Main Event champ claiming the one-and-only “Gold Spadie”.

Huge amounts of cash will be awarded over the 17-day period of the 2014 ACOP schedule, especially during the Main Event as it features a large HK$15 million (~US$2 million) prize pool guarantee.

The 2013 ACOP series awarded more than HK$49 million (~US$6.35 million) in cash and hosted 2,235 players. With the Main Event guarantee and poker in Macau continuing to grow, the 2014 ACOP is expected to be even bigger.

“There’s a new level of excitement for poker in Macau this year and we’re anticipating a big turnout for the ACOP.” said APPT President Danny McDonagh. “We’ll have further announcements as we approach the event date but the fact we’ve received player confirmations this far in advance just illustrates the excitement for the ACOP in year three.”

The player confirmations that McDonagh alluded to include seven members of Team PokerStars – world-wide superstars Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospeller and Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew, along with the Team Asia superstars Raymond Wu, Bryan Huang, Naoya Kihara and Celina Lin. Of these players, Wu has already won a Spadie trophy in the past and is excited for an opportunity to try and win the coveted ‘Gold Spadie’ in the ACOP Main Event.

“The ACOP is where the world’s best players compete in Asia.” said Wu, who claimed the first ever Spadie in 2012 after winning the Deepstack Championship event. “I want to be the best and that means beating the best. The ACOP attracts some of greatest minds in Asia as well as internationally. Those trophies represent something special and a collection of Spadies means you’d be good enough to play with anyone in the world.”

Wu and all the other Team Pros, along with hundreds of players from around the globe will have a chance to not only play in the Main Event, but to also hit the felt for events ranging in buy-in from HK$2,500 up to the HK$500,000 of the Super High Roller.

Some of the highlights on the 2014 ACOP schedule include the HK$2,500 Rebuy Championship and HK$11,000 Deepstack Championship of the opening weekend. One tournament that will certainly garner plenty of excitement is the HK$8,800 ‘2M GTD Spadie’, which will, as the name suggests feature a guaranteed prize pool of HK$2 million.

As mentioned, there is also a HK$500,000 Super High Roller, while there is also a “smaller” HK$250,000 High Roller set to take place. For those not able to play these massive buy-in tournaments, the HK$25,000 ACOP Warm-Up will feature a huge prize pool.

Highlights from the 2014 ACOP schedule can be found below, while more information about the venue and accommodation and can be found at the APPT website. Be sure to check back with Poker Asia Pacific for more information regarding the ACOP as it comes to light.
