It is quite unfortunate to see the demise of professional poker in Adelaide, specially since the Adelaide Casino was the pioneer of Poker in Australia, so I heard. The worse part is that things can change so easily yet Poker Zone Management is "out of dated", in my view. There is no "vision" for the Poker Zone and as such there is "no goal" for an Adelaide Poker Player to head to. Personally, I never liked "pub poker", I find thrilling to play against pros that will challenge every aspect of my game (skill, psychic, luck, knowledge, strategy, maths, etc) rather than playing simply to win money. Perhaps, the main reason why I haven't played in any other venues outside a Casino.

I strongly believe that the Poker Zone at the Adelaide Casino can come up with a very interesting structure that includes running satellites for the bi-year WSOP APAC. I have found so many Adelaide players travelling to Melbourne to play satellites for prestigious (a word that seems to be loosely used) events such as the Aussie Millions and WSOP that I am certain will jump to the opportunity to play these satellites in the Adelaide Casino. I have heard only complaints so I thought I could suggest a set of games that I believe could attract interest back into the Poker Zone at Skycity which are based mostly on what Crown Melbourne and other Casinos do. There is no need to "re-invent the wheel", specially when this means trying to make it a "square" wheel instead...

EXAMPLE ONLY:
Tue $125 Re-Entry Tney: Running as is
Wed $90 Re-Entry Tney: Running as is
Thu&Fri 6:30PM Step 1 WSOP APAC $65 Turbo (1 in 5) Win ticket to be used any time
Thu&Fri 9:00PM Step 2 WSOP APAC $250 Turbo (1 in 5) Win ticket to be used any time
Last Fri of each month $1,100 (1 in 10 win) Deep Structure Win WSOP APAC Entry $10,600
And allow players to sell their tickets back to the casino, after all they already made their rake!

Given that the WSOP APAC will only run in Australia every two years, this is the time to attract players running these satellites FROM NOW... Afterwards, PZ can run a more decent satellites to their $880 Mega Challenge which should in any case come with a Guaranteed Prize Pool of at least $16K.

Personally, I run my poker like a business and if I am going to travel to the city to play a game of poker I expect to get good ROI. A 30:1 horse is a lot more enticing than just 10:1...

There has been proof of successes in the past: ANZPT Adelaide attracted over 150 players, the PZ Championships in 2010/2011 was also above 100 players and out of them we had some of the best Australian players attending.

But having interesting structures and games without the proper "professionalism" from the dealers and overall service will be a job half done. Far too many times dealers at the casino have behave like "children in a playground", not taking their job seriously at all! In one occasion I had to put a dealer in his place because he was sarcastically putting pressure on me while I was in the tank, none player had called time (since I had just spent about 30sec thinking) or else, but the dealer "thinking he was so funny" interrupted my thinking process, and when I asked him "can you shut up so I can continue thinking" I almost got penalised but what it was worse is that he "didn't stop"! he purposely continue interrupting me. This is what I paid hundred of dollars for. I finally complaint to management but nothing has changed.

I hope that Poker Zone can learn from the good ideas of sites such as Crown Casino and even the recent Poker SA, put their "ego" aside and implement them better!

I hope that through "lobbying" we can do something to bring the top quality, top class and highly professional poker games back into the Adelaide Casino.

Great post, you raise some very interesting points.

While I hope the Adelaide Casino continues to survive and thrive, there's no doubt that Poker SA are offering a quality product. Competition is a healthy thing, so hopefully it encourages each other to provide better tournaments and services, and that can only be a great thing for players.

In terms of the Adelaide Casino running WSOP APAC satellites - they don't have any affiliation with Crown, and so I think they might be better served running satellites to their own major tournaments to help boost their own numbers.
