Introducing PokerStars LIVE Manila at the City of Dreams

December 13th 2014 By Joshua Bell

Poker in Asia continues to grow from strength to strength and that is certainly the case in the Philippines as PokerStars LIVE Manila is set to launch at the new City of Dreams Manila casino.

PokerStars have had a live poker room in Macau for several years and throughout that time had several temporary homes. Then, in early 2013, PokerStars LIVE Macau moved to the City of Dreams which has proven a huge success as the room has become the home of poker in Macau.

Now, in late 2014, PokerStars LIVE Manila is set to launch at the brand new City of Dreams Manila casino complex. The casino proper commences operations on Sunday, December 14th and it is on this day that PokerStars LIVE Manila will open its doors and host its first poker tournament.

The event is a freeroll tournament with players having a chance to win a trip to PokerStars LIVE Manila’s sister room in Macau to play in the famed Red Dragon. There will be three preliminary freeroll tournaments at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. local time, with those who progress playing in the ‘final’ at 8 p.m.

According to APPT President and PokerStars LIVE Macau head honcho Danny McDonagh, the poker room at PokerStars LIVE Manila features 12 tables, with cash game rake consistent with other rooms around the Philippines.

Future plans for events PokerStars LIVE Manila are not yet known, but it is likely that the room will look to play host to multiple ‘regional’ tournament series a year in the vein of the Platinum Series and Red Dragon series of events that PokerStars LIVE Macau holds.

Of course, the Asia Pacific Poker Tour has long featured the popular APPT Manila series and this new room will serve as the home to that tournament as well. The next APPT Manila will run as part of Season 9 of the tour and will take place from July 31st – August 9th, 2015.

The poker scene is still developing in the Philippines, but the passion for poker in the country is fierce and this new room will certainly play a huge role in growing the popularity of poker throughout the region.

The venue itself is reportedly world-class, with the City of Dreams parent company Crown Melco being behind some of the most popular entertainment venues in the world, including of course, the City of Dreams complex in Macau.

City of Dreams Manila is the second casino-resort to open in the Pagcor ‘Entertainment City’ precinct in Paranaque City and will feature three high-end hotels – Crown Towers, Nobu Hotel and a Hyatt hotel. The area is envisioned as Manila’s version of the Las Vegas strip and is sure to be popular with locals and tourists from around the Asia-Pacific and the world.
